Custom-built containers for research environments.

To establish an on-site power-to-X (PtX) research environment for a university, DC-Supply A/S – Danish Container Supply has delivered two custom-built 20-ft containers: A workshop container and an office container.

With the new container solution, researchers and students at the university can benefit from being in the immediate vicinity of a research-relevant environment for the development of future energy sources as well as increased knowledge of the latest energy technologies.

Both containers have been repainted to RAL 7016 (Anthracite grey) so that they match each other as well as the surrounding environment at the installation location.

20-ft purpose built workshop container with two zones

The workshop container is based on a 20-ft standard ISP container that is insulated with 70 mm mineral wool. In addition, the walls are covered with plywood, and the insulated floor is covered with non-slip vinyl. A door section with glass at the top and filling at the bottom has been inserted into the gable of the container. This can be opened all the way up. An emergency exit with a push bar is also fitted in the side of the container.

The workshop container is equipped with two zones – a standard zone and an ATEX zone. Both zones are equipped with ventilation systems, where the standard zone’s system is constructed as point extraction, while the ATEX zone’s is fitted as large extraction in the ceiling. The container is equipped with electrical installation with various outlets as well as light in both zones and control of both extraction systems.

s What is ATEX?

ATEX is an abbreviation for the French term “ATmosphère EXplosive”. An explosive atmosphere is an atmosphere with increased flammability due to particles in the air, e.g. flammable gases, vapors or combustible dust. In the EU there are two so-called ATEX directives (the installation directive 2014/34/EU and the user directive 1999/92/EC), where the user directive defines ATEX zones: “Explosive areas are classified into zones on the basis of the frequency and duration of the presence of an explosive atmosphere.” The ATEX directives must ensure an improved working environment and increased protection of workers in ATEX zones, just as they must protect the surrounding community and environment against dangers and damage from explosive installations. In Denmark, the directives are implemented by the Safety Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Office container with spacious workstations

The associated office container is based on our 20-ft standard model DSC 2042, which in this custom-built version has been given anthracite gray windows. The floor in the spacious office is made of vinyl with a herringbone look, while the troldtekt ceiling has built-in LED panel lights. The container’s three workstations have cable channels for IT equipment power, just as the office is equipped with a large notice board for the common overview.

What is Power-to-X?

Power-to-X (PtX) means converting electricity (power) into something else (x). The term covers technology that produces fuels, chemicals and materials based on green hydrogen. The conversion of electricity to hydrogen is the power-to-X process we currently use most. The process is well known and can be carried out on a large scale – however, it is still both expensive and energy-intensive, which is why further research in the area is important. It is the Danish Energy Agency’s assessment that PtX can become a significant element in the future energy system in Denmark.

Custom-built containers for test stations and research sites

At DC-Supply A/S, you will meet a team of experienced experts in the field of special adaptation and custom construction of containers – also for research-related work and various test stations, as seen in this transportable wind turbine test site station and in this mobile test station for product testing and safety checks.

Contacting our sales team, you can get help clarifying how a custom-built container can be a cost-effective solution for both permanent installation and as a mobile solution that you can easily transport between locations. In our technical department, engineers and Architectural technologist and construction managers are ready to make all necessary calculations, advise on fire safety and much more. Your container solution is built in our own workshop – and our skilled colleagues here are known for delivering top class craftsmanship.
