“Bytteboxen” – A mobile container solution for reuse and bulky waste in the city.
A new, mobile container-based solution delivered by DC-Supply A/S – Danish Container Supply helps solve two challenges in Aarhus city centre: Bulky waste delivered to a station instead of being dumped on the street and at the same time, saving AffaldVarme Aarhus lots of garbage collection runs throughout the municipality.
Custom-built mobile container solution for reuse and bulky waste
This custom-built mobile container solution from DC-Supply A/S – Danish Container Supply consists of two units: An open waste container that can be emptied by a grab lorry. In here, citizens can put larger furniture as well as decidedly damaged things that simply needs to be disposed of.
Additionally, the other unit “Bytteboxen” – a small reuse store where your smaller household items can be placed on shelves or in compartments ready to be put to further use, benefiting others at the same time. In this smaller container, the original doors have been removed, and it comes with a pre-installed partition as well as built-in shelves. Sedum plants have been laid on the roof, and the container is also equipped with fixed, laser-cut signs. To protect the contents from the worst of the weather, there is also a small overhang for cover.
Container project tests new bulky waste scheme
Like in many other urban environments, citizens in the centre of Aarhus do not own or have access to a car (and trailer). Even though they can order free home bulky waste collection, many are unaware of thi option, resulting in piles of bulky rubbish littering the city centre. AffaldVarme Aarhus wanted to look at whether a permanent bulky waste station would be a viable solution to remedy this problem. At the same time, placing “Bytteboxen” next to it also provides an opportunity to see if there people wish to exchange small inventory items with others, instead of letting everything go to waste.
During the trial period, AffaldVarme Aarhus also look at how much bulky rubbish is amassed on the streets in the area where the “Bytteboxen” is set up, hoping to positively affect the number of collection orders that they receive.

For AffaldVarme Aarhus, it simply made sense to use a mobile container solution for this pilot project. The tailor-made solution is a viable cost-effective model, that is easy to move around and relocate during the trial period, allowing them to pinpoint exactly where in the city centre a set-up of a possibly permanent bulky waste station is most effective.
